Overview

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic condition in which the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or doesn't use it effectively — resulting in elevated blood glucose levels over time. Unlike Type 1 diabetes, which is autoimmune in origin, Type 2 develops gradually and is strongly influenced by lifestyle, genetics, and environmental factors.

It is diagnosed when fasting blood glucose reaches 126 mg/dL or higher, or when HbA1c — a measure of average blood sugar over 2–3 months — is 6.5% or above. A significant portion of cases go undiagnosed for years because early-stage diabetes often presents with few obvious symptoms.

The most important insight from recent research is that Type 2 diabetes is not simply a condition to be managed — for many patients, it can be put into remission through structured dietary and lifestyle intervention, particularly significant weight loss.
